Any home or farm can generate their own electricity by installing photovoltaic solar panels. The panels turn the sun's photons into direct current (DC) electrons. Those DC electrons are then sent through and 'inverter" to become usable alternating current (AC). There was also some discussion rearding how WV public policy can be more supportive of distributed power generation, community solar projects and micro-grids as is being implemented so successfully in the UK and Germany.

There are dozens of homes with solar and wind power generation in Hampshire County. Installing residential solar panels qualifies for a 30% federal tax credit. And the USDA REAP program can assist farmers up to 25% of the cost if used for qualified agricultural purposes. Colin showed many photos of completed projects including residential, commercial and agricultural applications.
