Hampshire County Health Department Meeting Room
January 8, 2015 Meeting Minutes
Doors were opened at 6:00 pm for a pre-meeting social/dinner hour.
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm by Dale Brady, Convener, with 34 people attending. Dale welcomed seven new attendees and invited them to introduce themselves.
Tom Lewis spoke about 2015 failures in oil/gas production and fracking wells, which were financed by junk bonds. With the drop in gas prices, the money won’t be available to repay them, possibly contributing to a stock market downfall.
Dale mentioned that the meeting minutes are available on the SPH website. Newly elected treasurer Tom Kennedy reported that he is working with Steve Martin to get Tom’s name on the checking account, but was unable to report on a bank balance. $60.00 was collected in the donation jar.
Announcements by others included mention of an event at Frostburg University, Jan. 22-23, “Frostburg Grows”, info available online, and Feb. 26, 27, 28, Charleston, WV Small Farms Conference.
Dale wants to begin the “re-skilling challenge” next month. Let her know what topics are of interest.
Tonight’s presentation was on “Water”, presented by Tim Reese, Tom Kennedy, Andy Herbaugh, Dain Taylor and Tom Lewis, including Emergency Situations, Short-term Preparation and Long-Term Security. Go to SustainablePotomacHighlands.com under Interest areas/Water for a detailed report of what was covered.
To find a freshwater spring in your area, go to Findaspring.com.
Beth Reese has set up a lending library for the group, containing topical books of interest to members. This will be available at meetings to borrow and return books. Anyone who has books to include, bring them to the next meeting to be added to the library.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 pm. The next meeting is February 12, 2015. The topic will be A Local Transition Economy including bartering, time-banking, & sharing.
