The SPH library books, mainly donated by Beth Reese, are now on shelves at the Capon Bridge Library for anyone to borrow. The Hampshire Review ran an article about this donation.
Discussion tonight revolved around presentations for the coming year. Tom Lewis made the motion that assignments be given to members who volunteer to prepare a presentation each month, with their choice of topic and/or speaker. This was seconded by Robin Mills, and after discussion the motion passed. The months February to June were assigned as follows:
February - Robin Mills - Straw bale building
March - Tom Lewis = topic to be determined
April - Renewable Energy - Henry Maier & Charlie Streisel
May - Dorothy Kengla - topic to be determined
June - Tom Kennedy - Experience of spending 10 days off-grid
July - Jim Guy - Emergency communications
Anyone who has information/experience to add to these topics is welcome to join in and should contact the presenter.
Jim Guy reported on research he has been doing on CB Radios, which could be vital for communication in an emergency. He's looking at forming a network of CB operators. The equipment needed (CB, antenna, speakers, mike, etc.) costs between $400-$600. There's a club in Moorefield that Jim and Henry will visit and update us on information.
Robin Mills asked if we could have a candidate/issues presentation before the May primary, but was reminded that our organization is non-political. There are other forums in the county where that can take place.
The evening's presentation was given by Dale Brady, who offered resources for beginning small scale Permaculture practices. YouTube videos of Geoff Lawton, along with his website geofflawton.com, include a wealth of information to help us get started.
